This water intrusion was being caused by a down spout that was pouring water into the ground near this vent and the water was not being properly diverted away from the house.  Additionally, the ground was sloped towards the house leaving the water nowhere to go but to pool right here and search for level ground. 

Again, seeing something like this, although intimidating, doesn't automatically mean that you should walk away from the house.  A qualified contractor could repair these issues and the home would still be the same beautiful home you initially fell in love with.
